VIN Storyteller

What the factory records say about your car.

The VIN Storyteller looks a 3000GT or Stealth VIN up in the production database exported from Mitsubishi's CAPS system and tells you what the factory recorded about the car: its serial number, model and model code, classification, equipment, exterior and interior codes, date of manufacture and model year. It also counts how many identical cars (same year, model, interior, exterior and equipment codes) were built that model year.

17 characters, on the plate at the base of the windshield (driver's side) or on your registration. Up to 3 lookups an hour.

About the data

The information is based entirely on the production database exported from CAPS, and while it's very accurate, it may not be perfect:

  • Up to approximately 3,500 vehicles appear to be missing from the 1991 model year, mostly before September 1991 with serial numbers under 004400. It's unknown whether their data was lost or the vehicles were never produced.
  • Approximately 550 vehicles appear to be missing from the 1995 model year. They're all presumed to be Stealth R/T Twin Turbos, since no data for any 1995 R/T Twin Turbo is present.
  • In 1997, approximately 550 vehicles appear to be missing, likely produced between the first production period of November 1996 and the third production period of January 1997. No assumptions can be made about their trim levels.
  • Serial numbers 000001 through 000100 are typically reserved for vehicles that were crash tested or used for promotional purposes.
  • Mitsubishi appears to have used several codes for the same colours and equipment, so until every code is defined, counts of identical cars may show lower than they really are.
